Choose the Tank, Pump, and Controls as One Working System

A selection worksheet covers demand, pressure, elevation, suction, piping, reserve, power and exposure, plus controls, certifications and total cost.

A water tank with a pump is not one standardized product. It may be an atmospheric tank paired with a separate pump, a well system with a pressure tank, an integrated booster unit, or a portable battery-powered package. Treat this guide as a preliminary selection checklist: define the water source, intended use, required flow and pressure, elevation, piping, reserve time, power, and operating environment, then take those requirements to the pump curve, manufacturer’s instructions, and any applicable certification documents.

For household or rainwater supply from a cistern, an atmospheric tank paired with a clean-water booster or self-priming pump and automatic control is one configuration to investigate—not a universal recommendation. The exact pump must still meet the required duty at the installation’s actual operating conditions.

A conventional well system is different. Its pressure tank holds a limited amount of usable water between pump cycles and helps maintain system pressure. It is not equivalent to a large atmospheric tank used for reserve storage. A property may have both, but they perform separate jobs.

Portable cleaning systems are another distinct class. Seller listings include rolling and backpack battery-powered packages intended to feed water-fed poles for window and solar-panel cleaning. Their emphasis is mobility, not household pressure service.

Search results can obscure these distinctions. A search for “water tank pump,” for example, returns pump-only products promoted for ponds, aquariums and hydroponics rather than complete tank-and-pump systems, as shown on this Amazon search-results page.

Retail categories can be broader still. One water-storage pump catalog places clean-water boosters alongside sump, sewage, effluent, chemical-transfer and DEF pumps in the same category. Category placement does not establish tank compatibility, clean-water suitability or approval for drinking-water service.

Know what the listing actually includes

An atmospheric storage tank provides bulk reserve storage.

A pressure tank is part of a pressurized pumping system. It stores a limited amount of usable water—called drawdown—between pump starts.

An integrated water-supply unit combines several operating components in one assembly. A complete package may go further by including the storage tank, pump, controller, valves, power cord or battery, hoses and connectors. A title or product photograph does not prove that every one of those parts is included. Confirm the box contents, model numbers, connection sizes and required accessories.

The Grundfos MQ is a bounded example of an integrated unit rather than a complete tank package. It combines a pump, motor, controller, internal non-return valve and a small pressure tank. The vessel helps reduce repeated starts caused by minor leakage; it is not meaningful bulk-water storage. The unit starts when water is consumed and stops after demand ends.

The Grundfos PM 2 illustrates a different boundary. It is a controller, not a pump, storage tank or complete water-supply package. It can start and stop a compatible water-supply pump in a system with or without a pressure tank.

Likewise, a submersible marketplace pump promoted for a pond, aquarium or hydroponic reservoir does not become a complete water tank with a pump merely because it appears for that search phrase. The installation may still require a tank, controller, valves, hoses, fittings, filtration, electrical protection and a documented means of preventing dry running.

Before ordering, ask the seller to identify:

  • The exact tank, pump and controller model numbers
  • Every included hose, fitting, valve, cable, charger and battery
  • Whether the pump is external or submersible
  • The permitted liquids and any solids limits
  • Whether automatic start-stop and low-water protection are built in
  • Which components carry any required potable-water documentation
  • Which accessories are mandatory for outdoor or freezing conditions

Complete this worksheet for the installation, not for a preferred product. It is the information needed for a preliminary screen and for a useful discussion with a pump supplier or installer.

Keep three measurements separate:

  1. Atmospheric tank capacity describes bulk reserve water.
  2. Pressure-tank volume and drawdown concern pressure stability and pump cycling.
  3. Pump flow describes a delivery rate under stated operating conditions.

Consider bulk storage against consumption, source replenishment and desired reserve duration. Ask the tank supplier how outlet location and any required low-water cutoff affect usable capacity.

Choose a pressure tank for cycling control, not as a replacement for bulk storage. Its relevant figure is usable drawdown at the intended air precharge and pressure settings, not nominal tank volume alone.

They generally describe limits under different conditions.

The supplied evidence does not support a universal worked sizing example across cistern, well, irrigation and portable systems. If you cannot establish the required flow, pressure, elevation and piping conditions, use the worksheet as a handoff document for a qualified pump supplier, plumber, well contractor or system designer rather than guessing from a maximum-flow label.

The MQ figures above apply specifically to the MQ3-35 and MQ3-45 covered by the Grundfos installation manual. They are not general specifications for tank pumps. In particular, 22 GPM is a listed maximum flow, not proof that the unit will provide that flow at maximum suction lift, maximum pressure or any particular household duty point.

For the portable example, EquipMaxx lists 4.2-, 5.2-, 12- and 16-gallon packages for window and solar-panel cleaning. The available category evidence does not state pump flow, pressure, runtime, recharge time, dimensions or filled weight. It also contains conflicting voltage wording for the AquaSpray Pro 16, so the battery label, charger and current model documentation must be checked rather than selecting either voltage from the listing.

A pump-only listing must be evaluated on the same basis. A 1-inch connection does not by itself establish compatibility with a tank outlet or piping arrangement. Maximum flow does not establish delivery at the required duty, and neither specification proves suitability for drinking water.

Decide how the pump will start, stop, and avoid short cycling

Some integrated units monitor demand, start when an outlet opens and stop after demand ends. A component system may instead need a pressure switch, electronic controller, float switch or a combination of controls.

The Grundfos PM 2 shows what a separate controller can provide. It can operate a water-supply pump with or without a pressure tank and includes dry-running protection, anti-cycling, automatic reset and a maximum continuous operating-time function. Its start pressure is adjustable from 1.5 to 5.0 bar, but the permitted outlet elevation and the pump’s available discharge pressure depend on the selected setting, as detailed in the PM 2 installation manual.

A pressure tank can supply a limited amount of water before the pump restarts, reducing starts during small, intermittent demands.

Ask the seller or system designer what happens under four conditions:

  • Small leak: Will the pump repeatedly cycle, will anti-cycling protection intervene, or will a pressure tank absorb the small demand?
  • Loss of source water: Will the controller stop the pump and indicate dry running?
  • Blocked or closed outlet: Will the pump stop, maintain pressure or continue running?
  • Extended demand: Is continuous operation permitted, and can the pump maintain the required duty point?

Do not use a generic pressure-tank sizing formula without the required drawdown, pressure settings, pump capacity and manufacturer limits. Those inputs are not interchangeable across systems.

Check suction, priming, valves, power, and weather limits

A pump above the source has a suction lift and must raise water to its inlet.

Treat suction construction as model-specific. Confirm whether the instructions require non-collapsible suction pipe, a minimum diameter, a foot valve or a particular inlet non-return valve. Do not treat an advertised maximum suction lift as a preferred design target.

For the MQ3-35 and MQ3-45, Grundfos specifies horizontal installation, 1-inch NPT connections and filling the pump with approximately 1.2 to 1.5 gallons of water before startup. A foot valve is recommended when drawing from a well, while the supplied inlet non-return valve is recommended for long suction pipes or negative-suction applications to reduce loss of prime. The MQ is non-submersible and must not be installed inside a tank. Outdoor use requires the specified accessory cover. The manual also calls for electrical work by qualified persons and connection to a GFCI-protected circuit under the MQ installation and operating instructions.

Weather limits differ by product. The PM 2 installation location must be clean and ventilated, with protection from rain, direct sunlight and freezing. Its electrical installation must follow local requirements and the manufacturer’s earthing and protective-device instructions in the PM 2 manual. Do not transfer those exact requirements to an unrelated controller; check its own enclosure rating and instructions.

Use the exact equipment manual to commission the system. At minimum, verify:

  • Correct direction and placement of check, foot and isolation valves
  • Suction plumbing that meets the documented diameter, length and airtightness requirements
  • Priming performed in the manufacturer’s stated sequence
  • Inspection of connections for air or water leakage
  • Controller settings within the documented range
  • Required grounding, circuit protection and weather protection
  • Normal start and stop behavior at representative outlets
  • Protective alarms or shutdowns only through the documented commissioning procedure or a manufacturer-approved safe simulation

Budget for the complete system and its upkeep

The advertised tank or pump price is only one part of the project. Build a total-cost checklist that includes:

  • Atmospheric storage tank
  • Pump
  • Controller or pressure switch
  • Pressure tank, if required
  • Isolation and check valves
  • Foot valve where specified
  • Filter or strainer
  • Approved suction pipe
  • Discharge pipe or pressure-rated hose
  • Adapters, unions, bulkhead fittings and sealants
  • Electrical circuit and required protective devices
  • Outdoor cover, enclosure or equipment shelter
  • Freeze protection
  • Tank base, restraints or vehicle mounting
  • Installation and commissioning labor
  • Applicable permits and inspections

A retailer’s pump price is not an installed-system estimate. A portable package price may likewise exclude hoses, pole adapters, chargers, replacement batteries, vehicle restraints, filtration or filling equipment.

Scale maintenance to the equipment and water involved:

  • Inspect the tank, pump, piping and fittings for leakage, damage or corrosion.
  • Remove sediment when its condition or the manufacturer’s instructions warrant it.
  • Clean or replace filters and strainers as specified.
  • Examine check valves, foot valves, floats, switches and controllers.
  • Follow the pump manufacturer’s service and storage instructions.
  • Maintain batteries and chargers according to their specific manuals.
  • Investigate changes in taste, odor, color or sediment rather than assuming they are only pump problems.

For larger industrial, commercial and municipal tanks, inspections may be wet or may require the tank to be drained. Cleaning may be warranted after repairs or when sediment, biological growth or water-quality changes are found. Inspection frequency depends on the tank’s application, location, type and operating conditions; those commercial practices should not be converted into a universal residential schedule.

That source does not establish the classification of every small residential tank, but it does show why owners of larger tanks should use qualified inspection providers rather than attempting internal entry themselves.

The purchase sequence is straightforward: identify the water source and whether the water will be potable; decide whether the job requires bulk storage, pressure stabilization or both; record demand, pressure, elevation, suction, piping, refill rate, reserve, power and exposure conditions; compare complete packages and separate components at the required operating point; then verify certifications, controls, protective features, included parts, installation rules and total cost. If those inputs are unknown, obtain a site-specific assessment instead of choosing from an advertised maximum-flow figure.
