The Answer Changes At 0.5 And 1.15 THP
The federal standards concern covered dedicated-purpose pool-pump motors, not every motor that happens to move pool or spa water. DOE phases the requirements by THP band and manufacture date.

A newly manufactured conventional single-speed motor in that covered category therefore is not the straightforward legal replacement it once was.
A retailer may still display a product described as 1.5 HP or 2 HP. That listing does not reveal all the facts needed to decide whether it can lawfully be distributed for your application. The product could be old inventory, intended for a different application, categorized differently under the regulation, unavailable for shipment, or simply retained in a retailer’s catalog.
Nominal horsepower alone can also be misleading. A motor advertised as 1 HP may cross the 1.15-THP threshold when its service factor is considered. Conversely, a product title may omit the service factor or regulatory THP designation entirely.
Ask for the exact model, intended pump application, THP designation, manufacture date, represented compliance status, and destination eligibility. Retailer statements are useful for shopping but are not controlling interpretations of federal law.
Motors Below 0.5 THP Are Not Automatically Banned

Retail catalogs confirm that standalone single-speed replacement motors remain on the market, although category counts are not reliable live-inventory totals.

Royal Swimming Pools listed replacement motors from 3/4 HP through 2 HP. Displayed examples ranged from a 1 HP CBT2102 at $190 to a 2 HP SQ1202 at $459.99, with additional 3/4, 1, and 1.5 HP models between those prices.
Those listings establish market presence, not approval for every use. Prices, promotions, inventory, pickup status, shipping terms, and delivery estimates can change. Keep three separate questions in view:
- Is the exact motor genuinely in stock?
- May it be sold or distributed for the intended application and manufacture date?

Horsepower alone is not a match. Retail listings include 48Y, 56, 56Y, and 56J-related frames, plus square-flange, J-flange, C-flange, and through-bolt arrangements. These describe different physical interfaces.
